Sublimation vs embroidery vs DTF: which decoration is right?

The decoration method you choose decides how your custom apparel looks, how long it lasts, and what it costs. There is no single best option, only the right one for your fabric, your artwork, and your budget. Here is how the main methods compare.

Dye sublimation

Sublimation turns your design into a gas that bonds into the fibers of the fabric, so the print becomes part of the cloth rather than sitting on top of it. It never cracks, peels, or fades with washing, and it supports unlimited colors, gradients, and edge-to-edge all-over prints.

The trade-off: it only works on polyester and light-colored fabrics. It is the standard choice for performance jerseys, cycling kits, and anything with a complex, colorful design.

Embroidery

Embroidery stitches your logo directly into the garment with thread. It gives a premium, textured, three-dimensional finish that signals quality, which is why it is the default for polos, caps, jackets, and workwear.

The trade-off: it is best for logos and text, not large or highly detailed images, and cost rises with stitch count. Very fine detail and gradients do not translate well to thread.

Screen print

Screen printing pushes ink through a stencil, one screen per color. It is cost-effective for simple, bold designs at higher volumes and works well on cotton and cotton blends, making it a workhorse for tees and hoodies.

The trade-off: setup cost per color means it is less economical for small runs or many-colored art, and a very heavy print can feel stiff.

DTF (direct-to-film)

DTF prints your design onto a film that is then heat-pressed onto the garment. It handles full color and fine detail, works on both cotton and polyester and on dark fabrics, and needs no per-color setup, so it is excellent for small runs and complex graphics.

The trade-off: the print sits on the surface as a thin layer, so on very high-wear items it will not outlast sublimation over years of washing.

You do not have to pick just one

Most real orders combine methods. A team kit might use sublimated jerseys with an embroidered crest. A streetwear drop might pair a screen-printed front with an embroidered sleeve label. The goal is to match each element of your design to the method that renders it best and lasts longest.
