Minimum order quantity (MOQ) is the smallest number of pieces a factory will produce for a given style. It exists because setup, patterns, and material sourcing cost roughly the same whether you make 20 pieces or 200. MOQ is usually set per style and per colorway, not across your whole order.

Low minimums let a new brand or a small club start without overcommitting. Larger runs lower the per-unit price because the fixed setup is spread across more pieces.

The four things that drive your price

A custom quote is built from four inputs:

• Quantity. More units means a lower per-unit price.
• Fabric and weight. Heavier or technical fabrics cost more than basic knits.
• Decoration method. Embroidery stitch count, number of screen-print colors, or all-over sublimation each change the cost.
• Design complexity. More colors, panels, or placements add labor.

When you ask for a quote, provide all four and you will get an accurate number rather than a rough guess. A tech pack or even a clear reference photo speeds this up.

How sampling fits in

Before bulk, you should approve a physical pre-production sample. This is where you confirm fit, fabric weight, and print quality on a real piece. Sampling usually carries a fee, which a good factory credits back against your confirmed bulk order. Skipping the sample to save time is the most common way a first order goes wrong.

How lead time is built

Lead time is not one number, it is a sequence:

1. Spec and mockup: turning your artwork into a production-ready spec, usually a day or two.
2. Sampling: producing and shipping a physical sample for approval.
3. Bulk production: typically a few weeks after you approve the sample, depending on quantity and decoration.
4. Shipping: air or sea, tracked to your door.

Plan backward from your deadline. If you need kit for a season opener, start the conversation well before, so sampling and production are not rushed.

• Consolidate styles and colorways to clear MOQ more easily.
• Choose a decoration method that suits your art instead of forcing a complex one.
