Custom PE Uniforms for Schools in Bulk: Fabric, Sizing, Printing, MOQ, and Cost
October 29, 2026 · Custom uniforms
Custom PE uniforms for schools in bulk start at 100 sets per design from our factory, cost about $9 to $17 per set factory-direct (one printed tee and one printed mesh short) depending on fabric and quantity, and ship in roughly 3 to 5 weeks of production after sample approval. Order by late April for August registration; 500 sets and up gives the lowest per-set price.
Most of what ranks for this search is a US decorator package: a stock Gildan or Hanes cotton tee and an A4 tricot mesh short, one-color screen print on each, 24 piece minimum, and a free web store where students pick a size and pay by card. That model works well for a small school and for a two-week turnaround. It stops working when a district wants its exact school color instead of the closest stock shade, a women's cut and a youth cut built on the same design, a tagless neck with the school name inside, or 800 sets at a price that holds for three years. This guide covers both routes, with the fabric weights, construction, print methods, sizing program and timeline a PE department or athletic director needs to write a clean purchase order, and the factory-direct cost bands for a cut-and-sew program.
What goes into a custom PE uniform set?
A PE set in US middle and high schools is a short-sleeve tee and an athletic short, both in school colors, with the school name or mascot printed on the chest and a smaller mark on the short leg. Many programs add a sweatshirt and sweatpant for the cold months and a reversible tee for in-class games. The table below is the spec we build to for US schools, with the options that change the price.
| Piece | Standard build | Fabric and weight | Decoration | Common upgrades |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| PE tee | Crew neck, set-in sleeves, 1x1 rib collar, double-needle hem | 160 to 180 GSM cotton-poly jersey (60/40 or 50/50), or 140 to 160 GSM polyester interlock | One-color screen print front, optional name box | Tagless neck print with school name, contrast collar, women's cut, reversible two-color tee |
| PE short | 7 inch inseam (youth 5 to 6 inch), elastic waist with inside drawcord, side seams | 100 percent polyester tricot mesh, 130 to 150 GSM, with or without a tricot liner | One-color screen print on left leg | Side pockets, 9 inch inseam for high school boys, contrast side panel, sublimated school color |
| PE sweatshirt | Crew neck, 1x1 rib cuffs and hem | 280 to 320 GSM cotton-poly fleece, brushed inside | One-color screen print front | Hooded version, embroidered crest |
| PE sweatpant | Elastic waist, drawcord, open or elastic hem | 280 to 320 GSM cotton-poly fleece | One-color screen print on left leg | Side pockets, tapered leg |
For a program that only needs the tee and short, we build on the custom T-shirt and custom shorts lines and print both in one job so the school color and the ink match across pieces. For the cold-weather layer, the custom sweatshirt line uses the same color cards.
Which fabric holds up to a school year of PE classes?
A PE uniform gets washed once or twice a week for 36 weeks, often in a hot family dryer, and it has to look presentable in May. That is 40 to 70 wash cycles. Fabric choice matters more than print choice for how the set looks in spring. US blank brands quote weight in ounces per square yard; factories quote grams per square meter. One ounce per square yard is 33.9 GSM, so the 5.4 oz cotton tee in most US PE packages is about 183 GSM.
| Fabric | Weight | Shrinkage after 5 washes | Best for | Print method | Factory note |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 100 percent combed cotton jersey | 160 to 180 GSM | 3 to 5 percent if compacted, 7 to 10 percent if not | Schools that want the softest feel and the lowest piece cost | Plastisol screen print | Ask for compacted fabric in writing; uncompacted cotton drops a full size by December |
| Cotton-poly jersey 60/40 or 50/50 | 160 to 180 GSM | 2 to 3 percent | Most US PE programs; weekly washing, mixed climates | Plastisol screen print | Heather school colors are possible; dries faster than cotton |
| Polyester interlock, moisture wicking | 140 to 160 GSM | Under 1 percent | Hot climates, programs that want a sports look, reversible tees | Sublimation or poly-ink screen print | Standard plastisol migrates on dyed polyester; the ink turns the school color after a few washes if the wrong ink is used |
| Polyester tricot mesh (shorts) | 130 to 150 GSM | Under 1 percent | All PE shorts | Poly-ink screen print or sublimation | Liner adds about $0.80 to $1.20 per piece and keeps the short opaque when wet |
| Cotton-poly fleece (sweats) | 280 to 320 GSM | 3 to 4 percent | Fall and winter layer | Plastisol screen print, embroidery | Brushed inside; ask for anti-pill finish on the face |
Our default for a US school is the 60/40 blend tee at 170 GSM and the 140 GSM tricot mesh short. We run a 5-wash shrinkage test on the production fabric lot before cutting, measure the sample before and after, and put the numbers on the QC sheet the school receives with the photo and video report. If a district specifies 100 percent cotton, we compact the fabric and hold residual shrinkage under 5 percent; the sample is washed five times before the fit is signed off so the size the school approves is the size the student keeps.
Screen print, sublimation or DTF: which works for PE uniforms?
PE art is simple: a school name, a mascot, sometimes a name box, in one or two colors. That is what screen print was made for. The method only changes when the fabric is polyester or when the school wants its exact color across every piece.
| Method | Works on | Durability through 50 washes | Cost per piece, one location, 500 pieces | Use it when |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Plastisol screen print | Cotton and cotton-poly | Excellent if cured at 320 F; cracks only if under-cured | $0.60 to $1.00 for one color, add about $0.30 per extra color | Standard PE tee and sweats; the lowest cost at volume |
| Poly-ink or low-bleed screen print | Dyed polyester | Excellent; blocks dye migration | $0.80 to $1.30 for one color | Mesh shorts and polyester tees in dark school colors |
| Sublimation | White or light polyester only | Permanent; it is in the fiber, nothing to crack | $1.50 to $3.00 for a full panel | Exact school color not available as a stock dye, reversible tees, contrast panels, names and numbers for PE sports classes |
| DTF transfer | Cotton, blends, polyester | Good; a soft hand, holds well if pressed at the right time and temperature | $1.20 to $2.00 | Small reorders under 100 pieces, multi-color mascots, mixed garment colors in one order |
Two factory rules protect a PE order. First, a one-color school name on a dark polyester short needs low-bleed ink and a cooler cure; standard white plastisol on a navy poly short turns light blue by October. Second, a name box is printed in the same pass as the logo, so it costs nothing extra per piece; we print it as an outlined rectangle with "NAME" in the top left, 3.5 by 1 inch, on the upper back or under the front logo, wherever the school's current uniform has it. For a two-color reversible tee, both sides are printed before the shirt is sewn, so the art does not sit over a seam.
How do you set up sizing for 6th graders through seniors?
Sizing is where PE programs lose money. A 6th grader and an 18-year-old are in the same program, so the size curve runs from youth small to adult 3XL, and schools that guess the curve end up with a drawer of unsold youth smalls and a shortage of adult larges by the second week. The fix is a fit set and a roster count, not a guess.
- Fit set first. We send one sample of each size, youth S to adult 2XL, unprinted or with a sample print. The PE department has students try them on for one class period and marks the sizes that run small or large. The grading is adjusted before bulk. This takes about 12 days and costs the sample fee, which is credited against the bulk order.
- Count the roster, not the school. Order against the number of students enrolled in PE for the year plus 5 to 8 percent overage for new enrollments, lost sets and exchanges. A school that sells sets at registration should also count the sets left from last year by size.
- Split youth and adult. Youth sizes use a shorter inseam on the short (5 to 6 inches) and a narrower shoulder on the tee. One design, two size blocks, one print screen. The minimum applies to the design, not to each block.
- Women's cut if the school wants it. A women's tee is a separate pattern (narrower shoulder, shaped side seam, cap sleeve) and it counts as a second style for the minimum. Most PE programs stay with a unisex tee and offer the women's cut only for staff.
- Lock the size chart in writing. The chart with chest, body length and inseam per size goes on the quote, the sample report and the carton labels. Tolerance is plus or minus 1.5 cm on chest and length.
Our standard US PE size chart runs youth S (chest 32 inches, length 20.5 inches) through adult 3XL (chest 54, length 32), with adult inseams at 7 inches and youth at 5.5 inches. A school with its own chart from the previous supplier can send it and we grade to that so students keep the size they already know.
How should PE uniforms be packed and labeled for a school?
A US decorator ships to one address, usually with no polybags, and the school sorts the sets at registration. A factory ships in cartons by size, and the packing spec decides how much work the school office does on delivery day. Our standard PE packing is:
- Each tee and each short folded, polybagged with a size sticker on the bag, and a size sticker on the garment hem or neck. Sets are bagged together as tee plus short when the school sells them as a set.
- Inner bags of 10 per size, cartons of 50 to 60 sets, one size per carton where the quantity allows, carton labels with school name, size, piece count and carton number of total.
- A packing list by size and a carton map, sent as a PDF before the shipment leaves, so the school can plan the registration tables.
Every garment carries the labels US law requires: fiber content, country of origin (Made in Pakistan) and care instructions, as a sewn label or a tagless heat-transfer print inside the neck. The school name can be printed in the same tagless block at no extra cost. If the school or its parent district wants to be the company of record on the label, an RN number can be used instead of our name. Our US clothing label requirements guide covers the FTC rules and the RN process.
What is the MOQ and lead time for custom PE uniforms?
Factory-direct, the practical minimum is 100 sets in one design, mixed sizes, and 300 sets is where cut-and-sew pricing is clearly below a US decorator package. Below 100 sets we will say so and point you to a stock-blank route, because a 50-set order at factory pricing is not worth the freight and the wait. The school-year timeline is the part most quotes leave out.
| Step | Time | What the school does |
|---|---|---|
| Art, spec and quote | 2 to 4 days | Sends logo files, school colors (Pantone or a physical swatch), last year's size chart and a roster count |
| Pre-production sample and fit set | About 12 days | Students try on the fit set; the department signs off on sizes, print position and color |
| Bulk production | 3 to 5 weeks | Receives the photo and video QC report at AQL 2.5 before dispatch |
| Freight to the USA | 5 to 7 days air, 25 to 35 days sea | Receives the packing list and carton map before arrival |
For an August delivery, approve the sample by late April and ship by sea in June. A sample approved by mid June can still make August by air, at roughly $1.50 to $2.50 per set more in freight (an estimate that depends on carton count and the week). A top-up for second semester should be approved by mid October to arrive by sea in December. Reorders in the same design run on the same screens and the same size chart, and the price holds for the school year as long as the fabric and quantity band are the same.
What do custom PE uniforms cost per set in bulk?
The published US decorator packages we checked in October 2026 ran from about $20 per set at 24 sets down to about $12 per set at 1,000 sets, shipping included, on a stock cotton tee and a stock mesh short with a one-color print on each, adult sizes S to XL. Extended sizes, extra colors and a second print location are added on. The factory-direct bands below are for a cut-and-sew set on the fabric of your choice, your color, your size chart, polybagged and size-stickered. They are estimates for a standard build, before US duty and freight, and the quote replaces them.
| Quantity (sets) | Cotton-poly tee + mesh short, one-color print each | Polyester wicking tee + lined mesh short, one-color print each | Sublimated tee + sublimated short (exact school color) |
|---|---|---|---|
| 100 to 299 | $12 to $17 | $14 to $19 | $17 to $23 |
| 300 to 499 | $10.50 to $14 | $12 to $16 | $15 to $20 |
| 500 to 999 | $9 to $13 | $10.50 to $14 | $13 to $18 |
| 1,000 and up | $8 to $11.50 | $9.50 to $12.50 | $12 to $16 |
What moves the number: fabric weight (every 20 GSM on the tee is about $0.30 to $0.50), a liner in the short (about $0.80 to $1.20), a second print color (about $0.30 per piece per location), a tagless neck print (about $0.15, often waived at 500 sets), extended sizes 2XL and up (about 10 to 15 percent on those pieces), and a women's cut as a second style. On top of the factory price, US duty applies at the HTS rate for the garment (about 16.5 percent on a cotton tee and about 28 percent on a polyester short at the base rate, plus any additional tariff in force on the arrival date; confirm with your broker), and freight by sea is usually $0.60 to $1.00 per set at 500 sets. Our US apparel tariff guide walks through how that lands on a uniform order, and a DDP quote rolls duty and freight into one delivered price so the school's purchase order has a single line. For the tee and short on their own, the custom performance t-shirts and custom athletic shorts guides go deeper on construction and per-piece pricing.
How do you order custom PE uniforms from our factory?
Send five things and we return a quote with a sample plan in 2 to 4 business days: the logo in vector (AI, EPS, PDF or SVG), the school colors as Pantone numbers or a photo of the current uniform, the pieces you want (tee and short, or the full four-piece set), the roster count by youth and adult, and the delivery date you need to hit. If you have last year's size chart, send it and we grade to it. From there the steps are sample and fit set, approval, 50 percent deposit, bulk production with photo and video QC, balance before dispatch, and shipping EXW, FOB or DDP to the school or the district warehouse. Every set is cut and sewn in our own factory in Sialkot, invoiced by QVR Associates LLC in Texas, and covered by a remake-if-defective policy on any piece outside the approved sample. To start, request a quote with the roster count and the date, and we will tell you plainly whether factory-direct or a stock-blank route is the right call for your numbers.
Frequently asked questions
What is the minimum order for custom PE uniforms?
Factory-direct, the practical minimum is 100 sets (one tee and one short per set) in one design, mixed sizes. Below 100 sets a US blank decorator working from stock Gildan or A4 garments is usually the cheaper and faster route, and we will tell you that on the quote. A school with 300 or more students in PE is where cut-and-sew pricing clearly wins.
How much do custom PE uniforms cost per set in bulk?
Factory-direct, a 160 to 180 GSM cotton or cotton-poly tee with a one-color front print plus a 7 inch polyester mesh short with a one-color leg print runs about $12 to $17 per set at 100 to 299 sets and about $9 to $13 per set at 500 sets and up. These are estimates for a standard build, before US duty and freight. A DDP quote gives you the landed price in one number.
Which fabric is best for school PE shirts?
For a tee that is washed once or twice a week for a whole school year, a 160 to 180 GSM cotton-poly blend (60/40 or 50/50) is the best balance: it shrinks less than 100 percent cotton, dries faster, and holds a screen print well. A 140 to 160 GSM polyester wicking tee costs about the same and suits hot climates, but it needs polyester ink or sublimation, not standard plastisol.
When should a school order PE uniforms for the fall?
Approve the pre-production sample by late April. That leaves 3 to 5 weeks of production in May and June, 25 to 35 days by sea in June and July, and arrival in late July for August registration. If the sample is approved later than mid June, the order ships by air at a higher freight cost, or you plan a second-semester delivery in December.
Can PE uniforms be printed with a name line for students?
Yes. A printed name box on the upper back or on the front below the school name is a standard PE option, printed in the same screen pass as the logo at no extra cost per piece. Students write their name with a laundry marker. On polyester fabric we print the box with poly ink so the marker sits on a flat, stable surface.
